GO!

FAQ:

Is there is a size restriction?

It would be preferred if your works stayed under1 metre x 1 metre in dimension. If you feel your work needs to be larger than this size, please talk to us first.

I live outside Australia. Can I still enter?

Yes indeed, you can! In fact, please do! Last year we had entries from Brazil and England. We are aiming for world domination. Help us out.

Is there an entry fee?

When you have finished your artwork and are ready to enter it, we will then ask you to submit a high-quality digital photograph of your work with an entry form. At that stage, a fee of $20 per entry is required and that will be the only cost to the artist (apart from required postage/packaging to get selected artworks to us). That needs to be done by the last date in May 2017.

Do I need to buy a vintage / secondhand book?

No. You are welcome to source your bookish inspiration from wherever you choose. It could be a new book, an old book, an op-shopped book, a book from Uncle Arthur's shelf. We don't mind. But we do need the title of the book, and an artist statement to let us know how the book influenced your work.

What sort of artworks can be submitted?

That's like asking how long is a piece of string. Artworks in any medium can be submitted. We'd like to see the earnest, the heartfelt, the funny, the arcane, the bizarre and the floral. You can make it political (but please, go easy on us - no images of Donald Drumph). Glass, ice, paint, glue, paper, wood, metal, spaghetti, fabric. Whatever you'd like to work with. (But bear in mind, it needs to be able to last winter without disintegration or attracting small rodents.)

After our image has been submitted, what then?

A panel will sort through all the entries and we will select not more than 50 entries to exhibit. Those selected for exhibition are in the running for the First Prize, and will need to be at our address, ready to hang, no later than the 5 June.

Has the First Prize been raised?

Yes! We have raised the First Prize from $1500 to $2000.

Will there be other prizes as well?

Yes. We will have a prize for a Youth category, and a Mystery Prize (whooooooo).

Is there an exhibition of works from this competition?

Yes! The exhibition will open over the Queen's Birthday long weekend. There will be an opening and prize-giving night on 10 June 2017, and it is recommended that all accepted artists try to make this evening! (Hint: it's lots of fun!) The exhibition will run through winter to give as many people a chance to see it as possible.

Can we sell our works over the exhibition?

Absolutely! In fact, it is required that your works be for sale. We take a 25% commission on all works, which, all going well, will help us pay for competition expenses.

Can I invite my great-aunt to the opening?

You are welcome to invite anyone you like to the opening night! The more the merrier!

Will the opening night be catered?

Yes, it will be catered! There will be finger-food and soft drinks available, and a bar will be running.

What else should I do?

You should go on our mailing list immediately. You should also follow us on Facebook and Instagram (blarneybooksandart). You should certainly alert other artists to this competition. You should start work on your masterpiece. GOOD LUCK!

Edible Books Competition

Easter Saturday (15th), 4pm to 6pm. Well, it does more than shine. It radiates! An ex-English teacher, Jodi now devotes her time to her art practice, and lately that practice has involved a lot of bookwork! Jodi states, "Books have always played an important role in my life. Their physical presence serves as a kind of autobiography marking periods of time. Despite the advent of digital libraries and the decreasing space on my bookshelf I find it hard to part with books. I initially embarked on this body of work thinking that painting some of these books would release me from their sentimental pull and I would then be able to cull them. Paradoxically, now that they have been painted, another layer of meaning is added to their story and I’m even more reluctant to let them go.

Each painting depicts books I own or have sourced from my family. When I look at each book stack there is a flood of memories and feelings. Each painting contains multiple narratives - my own personal history intertwines with the stories within them. The fact that many other people have special memories attached to the same books means the narrative possibilities within each book stack are infinite.

Our mode of daily communication is increasingly digital but physical books will always have a place, not as mere marginalia but as treasured objects representing more than the words between the covers."

One painting stood out to me - The Little Oxford Dictionary, all by itself. I inquired about the meaning of this one, and Jodi told me that she always carried this little book with her, just in case she was caught out on a word, even camping. This is an artist after my own heart!

An interesting development occurred whilst Jodi was working on this exhibition. Somewhere along the line, Jodi and her husband Kim, who makes cigar-box guitars under the name High Strung Guitars, decided to build some cigar-box guitars made from books, or featuring a stunning book painting. There are ten of these guitars on show in this exhibition as well, and they add something truly remarkable to this exhibition.

More about Jodi:

Jodi Wiley is a Melbourne artist who is interested in themes of nostalgia, memory, place and the way we make meaning from personal narratives. These paintings have been created primarily with watercolour and touches of ink and gouache.

Jodi has been a past winner of the Darebin Art Prize and was awarded Highly Commended in the 2015 Nillumbik Art Prize for her painting Afternoon light. She has been a finalist in the Kennedy Prize, the Banyule Award for Works on Paper, the Agendo Art Prize and the Gallipoli Art Prize.

She has also worked in a library, been a high school English teacher and a freelance writer. Repeat.'

This is BiblioArt history - as she's now taken out the Grand Prize for two consecutive years! Sinead's work was multi-layered, deeply considered and responded well to her chosen book. It was inspired by Yasin of Arabia - An Encyclopaedia Britannica True-to-Life Book. Her artist statement is as follows:

"Yasin of Arabia details a day in the very simple life of a Jordanian family. When reading the book, I found repetition in shapes a common visual - herds of sheep, walls of bricks, patterns in traditional woven rugs; but also repetition in the daily tasks that form their simple life. The repetition of simple shapes within the artwork are a representation of this. The construction and the shape of each piece references the beautiful woven rugs made by the women in the family. A neutral base palette, which references the arid land and ancient sone villages, is then contrasted with colour. I limited the use of colour to only what I could find in the book - which is surprisingly bright and positive." Sinead runs a graphic design business, Lovelock Studio in Warrnambool.

'Sit and Listen' by Liz Gannon.

Bluestone Magazine's Local Art Award ($500) - Liz Gannon, 'Sit and Listen'

Bluestone chose this piece for its visual impact, for the dynamic use of materials, and for the way Liz employed the book in creating an unusual and standout piece for this competition. Her artist statement is as follows: "I chose a children's story book because I want to use something fun and colourful for my piece of furniture. What I loved most about this particular book is that its in black and white, but through its life it has been coloured in by (I'm assuming) the children who owned it. I was also looking for a small, unusual chair to capture the fun and personality of a child, which I'm confident I achieved. The images were scanned and manipulated specifically for the shape of the chair."

Liz Gannon has an art studio in Warrnambool, and her website is here.

'The Amazing Georgiana' by Helen Fitzhardinge.

Blarney Books & Art's Storyteller's Award ($250) - Helen Fitzhardinge 'The Amazing Georgiana' The inspiration for this work was the book, Portrait with Background by Alexandra Hasluck. For Helen, this has been one of those books which has led to further research and discovery, and the enjoyment in this response is palpable in her work. This is a thoughtful and meticulous work, and its presentation invites closer inspection. Her statement follows: "Raised as a leisured gentlewoman, Georgiana Molloy became a pioneer settler of Western Australia. With minimal servant aid she attended to all of the duties associated with running her household. Yet when asked by an English horticulturalist she found time to explore the bush and collect native plant and seed. She became a passionate, self-taught botanist, carefully cleaning and cataloguing her specimens before sending the results to delighted English horticulturalists. Georgiana collected over a thousand specimens, thus becoming a major contributor to the botanical knowledge of Australia. Unfortunately, this amazing woman has had little recognition for her achievements."

Helen lives a creative life in Terang, and, notably, has previously won the Storyteller's Award as well.

'Leaping through the Pages' by Finn Radley (11 years old)

Blarney Books & Art Under 18 Award ($250) - Finn Radley 'Leaping Through the Pages' Finn is 11 years old, and is lucky enough to come from a family of artists. Congratulations to James on a wonderful pair of works (which sold on opening night)! His statement is as follows: "The World's Greatest Wonders as seen through the eyes of the 1960s, with black and white photography. The story is designed for young readers, so there's not too much complexity, but the story is compelling enough to keep you interested and turning the pages at a fast clip. The City of Ember is an underground city, a last refuge for a dying world, and its residents haven't known life otherwise. But supplies are running low, the electricity falters regularly and there is a hint of panic in the (what must be stifling) air. Two young, likeable characters, Lina and Doon, find some evidence that there might be another world waiting for them, and we follow their journey through the darkness of the city, as well as the darkness found in desperate people, as they negotiate a path through and (eventually) out. The City of Ember finishes where you simply must read the next book. No two ways about it. We will get to the film as well.

"Filthy Rat"

During the 2013 Festival of Words in Port Fairy, I was lucky enough to be able to catch Simon Illingworth discussing his adventures in the hairy world of police corruption. The book Neridah had chosen was The Small Miracle by Paul Gallico.

This is Neridah's statement about her piece:

Once there was a boy named Pepino who lived in the mountain town of Assisi. He had no mother and no father. He lived in a stable with his beloved donkey, Violetta. Violetta was everything to Pepino and she was famed for her smile all throughout Umbria. As man's beast of burden, history has given donkeys a bad wrap. Only a few know the magic of donkeys. When treated with kindness, they are affectionate and devoted. One day Violetta becomes ill, and nothing seems to help. Pepino is sure that if he can just bring her into the crypt of Saint Francis, who loves all animals, she will get well. He is refused by the lesser clergy.

Never giving up hope, Pepino walks all the way to Rome to ask the Pope for permission. The Pope says "yes" and of course, Violetta goes in the crypt and slowly gets her smile back. The Small Miracle is about believing; never taking no for answer, perseverance and the love a little boy has for his donkey, Violetta.

Pepino Loves Violetta Acrylic & gouache paper collage mixed media Neridah McMullin (artist)

Sneak Peek at another Biblio-Art entry ....

Time for another sneak peek ... I should have savoured it a little. I did pause now and then to reflect on the writing, how it works with such short, punchy sentences, and how the prose flows rather than comes across staccato as a result. Her economy of words is something that is raised in almost every review, and there is good reason. Parrett doesn’t use a superfluous word, doesn’t use a long word where a short one will do, and doesn’t get heavy-handed with the text at any point. As a reader, you are kept in the safe shallows. For some of us, those of us who like to set sail for darker waters and more challenging constructs, it can be a little disquieting.

Harry and his older brother Miles are making the best out of their lives since their mother died in a car accident. Their father, an abalone fisherman, is abusive and neglectful, and the book takes you along their path to escape. There is also George, a scarred, old man living alone who has secrets of his own, who plays a part in their journey.

Whilst I greatly enjoyed and admired the writing style, and the young boys wormed their way easily into my heart, there wasn’t much in this novel I found new, refreshing or exciting. Each character seemed already familiar to me, and there was a lack of twist or surprise to keep me really interested. I powered through it in one afternoon because it was so easy to read, but mainly because I was hoping there would be something at the end that would make the book last with me. I’ll be keeping an interested eye on what Favel Parrett produces next.
