About the event

JŌRA (LV) - Baltic post-folk

Hailing from the heavily forested and swampy land of Latvia, Jōra will take you on a sonic tour of the sounds and melodies of the Baltic States, Scandinavia, and beyond. Traditional instruments such as the Latvian zither (kokle), overtone flute, and fiddle combine with driving guitars and ethereal soundscapes to create music that’s simultaneously ancient and modern. Listeners will be treated to instrumentals and songs reflecting solstice rituals, Baltic folklore, endless summer nights and cold, dark winters - expressed in a range of languages including Latvian, Latgallian, Lithuanian and English.Formed in late 2020, Jōra is made up of four multi-instrumentalists: Dārta Drava (fiddle, vocals), Ivars štubis (guitar, vocals), Kalvis Vītols (percussion, cajon, vocals) and Lauma Matule (Latvian zither, overtone flute, recorder, vocals). The band has released one EP and two singles, with their first full length album scheduled for release in December2023. Their 2022 single “Dancoj visu Jāņu nakti” (I Danced all Midsummer's Eve) has received radio airplay in Latvia, Lithuania, Czechia and more. Jōra’s other 2022 single “Oi agri, agri” (Early, early, the Sun Rises) was chosen as part of the Latvian selection for Womex 2022 and was also featured in the biannual Latvian folk compilation album “Sviests 9”. The band is pleased to announce a lightning tour of Southeastern Australia in mid-January 2024.
